State Secretary holds first mobility meeting between unions and Uber

Cancun, Q.R. — A meeting between state authorities, unions and Uber was held Tuesday. The Secretary of the State Government, Cristina Torres Gómez, confirmed the meeting.

She detailed that those involved included state authorities, transport platforms, taxi driver unions, deputies of the Mobility Commission and lawyers for the various parties.

“There is an issue of civility. There have been meetings, work groups and we had one with the participation of the Legislature, which comes in compliance with the agreement issued by the Chamber,” she said.

Torres said that during the meeting, they outlined a plan that will benefit the state of Quintana Roo, adding that the objective is to build peace in the new framework that will regulate Uber.

She said that all those who attended the meeting left out private interests and focused on seeking the common interest of the state. Torres said that the meeting took place in Cancun and, although there were very different opinions, the entire meeting was very civil.

“Some have presented draft bills, others have presented drafts of the regulatory framework which will be open until February 3, and then there will be work by the lawyers and the members of the Transportation Commission for the formation of the initiative,” Torres explained.

The meeting was the first step to adjusting the state’s current mobility laws that will allow Uber to operate legally. The deadline for Congress to address the local regulatrory framework is February 26. Torres said that more meetings are expected before then.
