Riviera Maya, Q.R. — The Government of Quintana Roo says they have installed 25 safe points along federal highways. The safe points were chosen to provide coverage in dead areas allowing drivers access to free Internet.

State Secretary Cristina Torres Gómez says the safe points allow motorists, residents of rural communities and tourists free access to satellite internet via Wi-Fi, allowing them to contact emergency phone numbers, ambulances, hospitals, fire departments and tow trucks.
Torres says the Safe Points Program covers highway areas lacking cell phone coverage. She said more than 17,000 vehicles use roads every day in areas where there was no coverage.
The points provide communication with the Public Security Directorates of the municipalities of Benito Juárez (Cancun), Othón P. Blanco, Tulum and Playa del Carmen.

The 25 points include 13 on Federal Highway 307 on the Felipe Carrillo Puerto-Tulum section, 11 points on Federal Highway 293 in the Lázaro Cárdenas-Polyuc section and one point on Federal Highway 184 on the Felipe Carrillo Puerto-Muna section.

Torres said the installation of the points by the state government allowed them to transform isolated highways into safer and more connected roads, addressing the problem of poor communication and lack of emergency services.
