Start of lobster season stalled for some island fishermen

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Fishermen from the five cooperatives of Isla Mujeres have already reported catching nearly two tons of lobster. Island fishermen reported the hefty catch during the first two days of official lobster season.

Despite bad weather and the illegal poaching that had been taking place during the four months of ban, the season has started on the right foot for them, however, they will likely retreat to land before the arrival of Beryl Thursday.

That catch-scenario has not been the same for Cozumel fishermen. With Hurricane Beryl heading for the southern coast, Cozumel fishermen have been forced to postpone the start of their season by one week.

Isla Mujeres fishermen have caught nearly two tons while Cozumel fishermen have been forced to postpone.

The biggest reason is simply because all boats have been pulled from the sea in anticipation of the category 1 storm. Island fishermen from the Maria Elena community camp are expecting the area of Bahía del Espíritu Santo to be within the hurricane’s destructive path.

Cozumel lobster fishermen are hoping to begin fishing next week.
