Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Lobster season has officially begun for Quintana Roo fishermen who are hoping to fetch a good price this year. Local ports have been open for the past few days after being shut due to ongoing stormy weather conditions.
An open port means local fishermen can head out to sea, however, Baltazar Gómez Catzín, President of the State Federation of Fishing Cooperatives, says they are anticipating another closure due to weather.
The imminent arrival of Hurricane Beryl will see the state’s ports closed again, at least to small vessels. In the meantime, he says at least 40 boats from Isla Mujeres alone will head out in search of lobster.
The Cooperatives held a meeting prior to the opening of the season with the participation of directors of the Quintana Roo associations along with buyers, he said. At the meeting, they agreed on 350 to 400 pesos per kilo as a starting price. A price for tail has not yet been set, he added.
