Othón P. Blanco, Q.R. — State Congress has approved a call to have more inclusive options for people with disabilities. The initial call was for public transportation for the disabled, however, that call has been extended to include beaches.
Cristian Muñoz Castillo, President of the Unificación Integral Quintanarroense, says in the municipality of Othón P. Blanco alone there are around 28,000 people with disabilities.
He says Congress approved inclusive public transportation to guarantee the disabled a right to mobility, which he has described as a great advancement after many years of fighting.
He says members of the various groups will work to also create an inclusive beach in the south of the state for people with disabilities. He says in the south of Quintana Roo there is neither the infrastructure nor adapted services for the disabled, something that could constistute discrimination.
“There are none in this part of the state. It has been thought that it could be in Calderitas where the restaurant area is currently being remodeled and there one could be created with adapted equipment so that people with disabilities can also enjoy it.
“We already have the endorsement of the ejidos and it only remains to be determined if the Chetumal City Council will support and make the necessary arrangements to carry out the project in favor of this vulnerable sector.
“There are around 28,000 in Othón P. Blanco alone, so it is a fairly large number,” he explained.
Inclusive beaches have been implemented in several areas in the northern region of the state, but not in the south. Muñoz Castillo inclusive beaches are essential to ensure that all people, regardless of their disabilities, can enjoy the beauty and benefits of the sea.
He says he is hoping that authorities will be willing to promote inclusive beaches for the benefit of the elderly and disabled who require easy access to the beach and the water. In September of this year, Cancun inaugurated its first full inclusive beach for the disabled.
