Cancun inaugurates its first fully inclusive beach for the disabled

Cancun, Q.R. — Cancun has equipped one of the city’s most popular beaches to be fully accessible as an all inclusive beach. Cancun’s Playa Las Perlas is the city’s first official inclusive beach for the disabled.

Cancun Mayor Ana Paty Peralta said the Federal Maritime Land Zone (Zofemat) will be in charge of keeping the public beach resort in optimal conditions for its visitors.

Playa Las Perlas has been redesigned so that everyone can enjoy the beach in and out of the water.

“We can proudly say that the beauty of our sea is accessible to everyone. We know that people with disabilities face many obstacles and it is our responsibility, as a society, to break them down one by one. With actions like these, we are closing those gaps of inequality, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their circumstances, can enjoy these wonderful spaces,” she said.

Zofemat (Zona Federal Marítimo Terrestre) Director Justo Román Miranda Rocha reported that three wheelchairs, three amphibious chairs, two amphibious lounge chairs, two amphibious walkers and mats were acquired to guarantee water access from the beach so that people can enjoy a comfortable, convenient and safe space.

He said to comply with universal accessibility regulations, various adaptations were made, including separate bathrooms for people with disabilities, ramps, railings, a deck with exclusive palapas, installation of a tactile line and signage with a QR code that leads to an explanatory video of Playa Las Perlas, with sign language for people with hearing disabilities.
