Skeletal remains found on Puerto Morelos ranch raises to 16

Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — Quintana Roo authorities say more than a dozen bodies have been found buried on a Puerto Morelos ranch. Last week, police began investigating a ranch after the discovery of the remains of four people.

Since then, a dozen more bodies have been found. On Monday, State Attorney General Raciel López Salazar reported that on the property, identified as Sac Lol near the town of Leona Vicario, the remains of 16 people have been found.

He reported that their ongoing investigation to date has uncovered 15 points of forensic interest within the property, 10 of which have already been analyzed. At these sites, specialized teams detected evidence consistent with clandestine graves.

López Salazar reported that the clandestine graves were found covered with a mixture of earth, lime and cement. Police, accompanied by canines and high-tech units, found the skeletal remains.

“As of Monday, we continued our work inside the ranch. We have located the skeletal remains of 16 people which have already been transferred to the Forensic Medical Service to determine their identity, the cause of death and when they occurred,” the said.

López Salazar explained that specialists in genetics, anthropology and forensic odontology are participating in the proceedings, working to establish the identify of the victims and whether there are any matches with missing persons reports, which he added, could take several weeks due to the number of bodies and the advanced state of decomposition of the remains.
