Sea turtle lodged between limestone rocks freed off Punta Morena

Cozumel, Q.R. — The island’s ecology sub-directorate participated in saving a trapped sea turtle on Punta Morena Saturday. Personnel headed to the eastern end of the island where they found an adult turtle lodged between sharp limestone rocks.

“In a joint effort, and as part of its commitment to environmental conservation, the Municipal Government of Cozumel, through its Ecology Sub-directorate, coordinated the successful rescue of a green sea turtle,” the city reported.

The turtle was trapped between rocks in a difficult-to-access area approximately one kilometer before reaching Punta Morena on the eastern side of the island.

“The turtle, approximately 1.40 meters long and weighing an estimated 190 kilograms, was found trapped in a small hole between rock formations which impeded its mobility and put its life at risk,” they said in a statement.

The operation involved members of the Ecology Sub-directorate, Civil Protection, Fire Department, lifeguards, Navy personnel and civil society volunteers. Through combined efforts and resources, they were successful at removing it from its lodged position and releasing it.

“After several carefully coordinated maneuvers, the turtle was successfully released and returned to its natural habitat in optimal condition,” the City of Cozumel said.
