Roadwork and accident drives PDC to Cancun travel time up to more than two hours

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Traffic was at a snail’s pace again Wednesday along the federal 307 between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Motorists heading toward Cancun found themselves locked in the double lane of traffic that was barely moving.

Between the ongoing road construction and a fresh accident, highway traffic was locked for nearly two hours Wednesday afternoon. The accident happened near the Cancun police filter, a short distance from where roadwork is being done, which is also slowing traffic.

Drivers heading north found vehicles at a near standstill at Puerto Morelos Wednesday. The more than 30 kilometer-long line of cars and trucks crawled along the federal 307, taking more than two hours to reach Cancun.

Some drivers created shoulder lanes to try and bypass the vehicles that were on the highway in an attempt to get ahead. In some areas, the normally two-lane road was expanded to four lanes by impatient drivers.

National Guard Highways and the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) are asking highway 307 drivers between Playa del Carmen and Cancun to take the necessary precautions regarding travel time.

Highway roadwork is expected to take several weeks to complete. Already this week, the SSC of Solidaridad issued a “stay calm” warning to drivers using that stretch of highway due to the slowed pace of traffic.
