Riviera Maya, Q.R. — A section of the federal 307 heading toward Cancun was backed up for kilometers Tuesday due to roadwork. Drivers leaving Riviera Maya and heading for the northern city quickly found themselves at a highway standstill early Tuesday afternoon.

Traffic was so backed up that the SSC (Secretary of Citizen Security) of Solidaridad issued a “stay calm” driver warning late Tuesday morning.
“Caution, Solidarenses! Traffic continues towards Cancun. Due to rehabilitation work on Federal Highway 307, traffic is reported on the Playa del Carmen – Cancun section. Recommendations: Plan your route in advance. Respect the road signs and stay calm,” the Seguridad Ciudadana Solidaridad (SSC) posted on social media.
Traffic is expected to continue being backed up for weeks due to major roadwork that is being carried out by the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport (SICT).
The Secretaría de Infraestructura, Comunicaciones y Transportes (SICT) will continue with the road rehabilitation which is being done around the state of Quintana Roo.The SICT is investing 75.8 million pesos to rehabilitate 630 kilometers of highway infrastructure around the state.
The major state-wide project includes road leveling, pothole repair, resurfacing and permanent sinkhole fixes. The SICT project is managed through the Subdirectorate of Works and the General Residence of Road Maintenance.
Details of what is planned includes the modernization of sections of the state’s main arteries which includes highways 307, 184, 186 and 295, as well as the sinkhole on the Cancun-Playa del Carmen route.

Road work will be carried out specifically from km 303 to 311 of the Playa del Carmen-Cancun section where there is a sinkhole.
Federal Highway 307, which is the busiest, connects Cancun, Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Bacalar and the capital city of Chetumal. There are also work planned for the access roads and the junction to the Cancun International Airport.
Along highway 186, the Francisco Escárcega-Chetumal branch to Subteniente López (to Belize) from km 0.0 to 3.6, and its branch from km 1.3 to 3.35 will be worked on. On Highway 184 Mérida-Felipe Carrillo Puerto, work is being carried out on the border section of Yucatan and Quintana Roo-Felipe Carrillo Puerto from km 117 to 213.
On highway 295 Valladolid-Felipe Carrillo Puerto, border section of Yucatan to Felipe Carrillo Puerto, from km 46 to 144. On Highway 180 Merida-Puerto Juarez, on the border of Yucatan-Puerto Juárez, from km 230 to 301.

Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa says the work will guarantee safe roads by ensuring they are in optimal condition.
