Riviera Maya, Q.R. — The state of Quintana Roo is recovering from a four-day dip in temperatures due to a recent cold front. An Arctic air mass entered the Yucatan Peninsula December 30 and seemed in no hurry to leave.
The mass of very cold air hovered over the region for four days before finally moving off. State authorities have reported recording nighttime temperatures of below 10c (50F) in the center of the state due to that cold front.
Other cool nighttime temperatures recorded for the Mexican Caribbean from that mass of Arctic air included 13C (55F) for Playa del Carmen and 16C (61F) for Cancun.

According to State Civil Protection, Felipe Carrillo Puerto recorded a very cold 9.8C (49.6F) on the night of January 1, 2026. That cool temperature was followed by 12.6C (54.6F) in José María Morelos, both located in the center of the state.
Other recorded lows for the night of January 1 included wake-up temperatures January 2, 2026 of:
Sian Ka’an 2; 13.4°C
Playa del Carmen; 13.0°C
Kantunilkin; 14.1°C
Chetumal; 14.4°C
Cancun; 16.0°C
Cancun Radar; 16.2°C
Xcalak Reefs; 18.5°C
Holbox; 18.0°C
Cozumel; 21.0 °C
Nicolás Bravo 22.0 °C
“Due to the mass of cold air that propelled cold front number 25, minimum temperatures of 9.8 °C have been recorded in Quintana Roo which will continue on January 2 and 3 mainly in the early morning and at dawn,” the State Coordination of Civil Protection Quintana Roo reported.
Playa del Carmen meteorologist Antonio Morales Ocaña says temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius during January and above 38 degrees during the hot season could set new historical records.

He says that increasingly marked temperature extremes have been recorded in recent years, both highs and lows, temperatures that could again, break records during 2026. The recent recorded low of 9.8C is the coldest temperature noted so far this winter.
