Arctic air mass to arrive earlier and stay later than initially forecast

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — A mass of Arctic air heading for the Yucatan Peninsula is now forecast to arrive a day earlier. Once in the region, it will hover over the peninsula for a day longer than initially forecast.

On Tuesday, the National Meteorological Service (SMN) reported that for December 30, “cold front number 25 will extend over the Yucatán Peninsula, continuing to interact with an atmospheric river and an upper-level trough causing torrential downpours in areas of Oaxaca, Veracruz, and Tabasco.”

Very heavy rain is also forecast for Puebla, Campeche and Quintana Roo with heavy rain in Yucatán. Meanwhile, the Arctic air mass associated with the front will maintain the “Norte” event with gusts of 90 to 110 km/h along the coasts of central and southern Veracruz and the Isthmus and Gulf of Tehuantepec.

Gusts of 60 to 80 km/h are expected along the coasts of Tamaulipas, northern Veracruz and western Tabasco and of 50 to 70 km/h along the coasts of Campeche, Yucatán, and northern Quintana Roo.

These gusts will create waves of 3.0 to 5.0 meters in height along the coast of Veracruz (central and southern regions) and the Gulf of Tehuantepec, waves of 2.5 to 3.5 meters in height along the coasts of Tamaulipas and northern Veracruz and waves of 1.0 to 2.0 meters in height along the coasts of Campeche, Yucatán and northern Quintana Roo.

“On Wednesday, cold front number 25 will extend over the Caribbean Sea, interacting with a low-pressure trough over the Yucatan Peninsula and the southwestern Gulf of Mexico generating heavy, isolated showers in Veracruz, Oaxaca, Chiapas, and Tabasco.

“Periods of showers in Campeche and Quintana Roo are likely as well as isolated rain in Yucatan. The Arctic air mass associated with the front will maintain the “Norte” event with gusts of 70 to 90 km/h in the Isthmus and Gulf of Tehuantepec, and with gusts of 40 to 60 km/h, decreasing during the afternoon, along the coasts of Veracruz (central and southern regions), Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatan, and Quintana Roo.
