Riviera Maya, Q.R. — A majority of the Yucatan Peninsula will likely feel the chill from the approaching cold air before it arrives. A north event of strong winds will push that cold air into the region ahead of its official arrival Thursday.
Cancun and Riviera Maya weather will be affected by the mass of approaching Arctic air for New Year’s Eve.
According to Mexico’s National Meteorological Service (SMN), strong winds of between 60 km/h and 80 km/h will be felt around the entire Yucatan Peninsula due to cold front 25.
“The new cold front (number 25), driven by an Arctic air mass, will approach and enter the northern and northeastern border regions of Mexico,” the SMN (Servicio Meteorológico Nacional) reported Monday.

“On Tuesday and Wednesday, cold front number 25 will move across southeastern Mexico and the Yucatán Peninsula, bringing heavy to very heavy rainfall to these regions.
“Intense to torrential downpours are forecast for Puebla, Veracruz, Oaxaca, Chiapas, and Tabasco on Tuesday. The Arctic air mass associated with the front will maintain lower temperatures in northern, northeastern, eastern, central and southeastern Mexico, as well as strong northerly winds along the coasts of Tamaulipas and Veracruz, the Isthmus and Gulf of Tehuantepec, and very strong winds in the Yucatán Peninsula.
“Additionally, the possibility of snow/sleet will continue on Tuesday on the peaks of Pico de Orizaba and Cofre de Perote,” the SMN reported.

For Cancun and Riviera Maya, as much as 25mm of rainfall is expected as the cold Arctic air reaches the coast. Very strong winds are also expected that will likely affect local ferry services.
The cold mass of Arctic air is forecast to leave the region January 1, 2026. In the meantime, night and daytime temperatures remain pleasant around the entire state, averaging 31C (88F) for daytime highs.
