Refloating of sunken Isla Mujeres boat hit by ferry begins

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — The resurfacing of the mostly-sunken boat hit by an Ultramar ferry over the weekend has began. Crews began the refloating process Monday afternoon, two days after the accident.

The private boat was hauled to a naval dock Saturday by a second Ultramar ferry after it was hit. The two vessels collided in Isla Mujeres water early Saturday evening when the Ultramar ferry, that was heading from the mainland to the island, crossed paths with the private boat.

The impact between the ferry and boat caused extensive damage in the boat’s hull, causing it to sink.

Bilge pumps were being used Monday to refloat the boat. During the process, the boat will remain in waters off a navy dock.

On Saturday, State Civil Protection commented on the two-vessel crash saying in part that “investigations into the causes of the incident will be carried out by the competent authorities who will be responsible for determining the exact circumstances and the definition of responsibilities.”

Municipal authorities have not provided a cause for the collision. Photo: July 27, 2024.

However to date, Isla Mujeres authorities have not commented on the collision or released any information on a cause.
