Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — A private boat sunk Saturday afternoon in Isla Mujeres waters after colliding with a ferry. The accident happened near Puerto Juárez when a private boat and Ultramar ferry collided after crossing paths.
The Ultramar ferry had left Puerto Juárez around 5:00 p.m. and was heading to the island of Isla Mujeres when a private boat carrying five is reported to have crossed its path. Both boats collided. While no injuries were reported, the private boat sank as a result of excessive hull damage.
Nearby boaters were quick to help those on board the damaged boat before it took on too much water. A second Ultramar ferry towed the mostly-sunken boat to the docks of the Fifth Naval Region where the tourists were medically reviewed by Navy personnel.
Maritime authorities have already reported the start into an investigation into the cause of the collision.
In a statement, State Civil Protection said “this afternoon a maritime incident involving a transport vessel and a private yacht-type vessel was recorded in waters near the coast of Isla Mujeres.
“Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the incident. A group of boats that were in the surrounding area quickly went to the scene to help the people who were on board the yacht.
“These people were brought to safety and received timely medical attention without needing to be transferred to a hospital.
“So far, only the sinking of the yacht has been recorded. It is important to note that no fuel spill was reported. Investigations into the causes of the incident will be carried out by the competent authorities who will be responsible for determining the exact circumstances and the definition of responsibilities.”
On Friday evening, a private boat carrying six tourists caught fire near the island. Flames were seen through windows under deck that quickly spread upward consuming the entire boat.
