Car totaled after slamming into video surveillance tower at police checkpoint

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — The driver of a speeding car that crashed into a highway police filter remains in hospital. The driver was transferred to hospital Wednesday night after taking out a video surveillance tower at checkpoint one.

Police offices from the checkpoint secure the scene of their own accident Wednesday night.

According to early information, two people were in the private car when it slammed into the checkpoint tower along the federal highway. Early reports say a man and woman were arguing in the car when the driver hit the tower.

The police filter surveillance tower was toppled from the impact that left the vehicle a write-off. Police officers inside the checkpoint building ran toward the single vehicle accident that took out their video surveillance.

The speeding driver slammed into the checkpoint video surveillance tower, knocking it down.

The woman from inside the car was taken into protective custody by agents from the Specialized Group for Attention to Family and Gender Violence (GEAVIG). Authorities have not said if alcohol was involved in the crash.
