Cozumel, Q.R. — Two competing vessels that transport passengers from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel collided Monday morning. Captain of the Ultramar 1 collided with Xcaret Xailing’s Xelha while heading for berth 6.
Ferry boat Xelha was docked at berth 5 where it was refueling when the approaching Ultramar vessel collided with it as it attempted to dock.
Both bumped boats suffered minor paint damage when Xelha was hit on the port side of the stern.
The incident happened early Monday morning at the Cozumel pier. Several local residents witnessed the collision as the Ultramar ferry approached.
There were no injuries reported. Both companies continued to run their routes normally.
Maritime authorities will investigate the incident. Public comments from authorities as to what happened have not been issued. It is the second collision in less than a month between Ultramar and Xcaret Xailing vessels at the Cozumel Fiscal Pier.
