Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Emergency personnel from Playa del Carmen were at the scene of an early morning collision Monday. Two cars collided along the federal highway south of the city when one driver allegedly fell asleep at the wheel.
The accident happened around 6:45 a.m. Monday morning near the Grand Palladium Hotel.
According to initial reports, a white Dodge Attitude was traveling northbound when it crashed into the metal guardrail. The preliminary report indicates that the driver was speeding and allegedly fell asleep while traveling the highway.
After hitting the rail, the vehicle returned to the road and struck the side of a blue Tsuru. Both vehicles ended up overturned.
Paramedics attended to both drivers, one of whom was taken to hospital with severe injuries. The driver of the white vehicle was evaluated and found to have sustained only minor injuries.
