Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Thousands around the state celebrated Three King’s Day on January 6. Heads of municipalities cut rosca de reyes bread and handed out toys to children in celebration.
Governor Mara Lezama celebreated in Chetumal with more than 5,000 who turned out for the free public event Monday.
In Playa del Carmen, Mayor Estefanía Mercado cut a kilometer long rosca de reyes on Fifth Avenue. The bread, which contained 2,500 baby jesus dolls, was cut into 7,000 pieces and distrubuted to locals attending the event.
“This is the longest rosca de reyes that Playa del Carmen has ever seen. It is a rosca that represents one kilometer of love, one kilometer of joy, one kilometer of prosperity that awaits us all in 2025,” said Mercado during the Monday evening celebration.
The monumental rosca de reyes bread was made by 200 cooking students from the University of Vizcaya, whose institution Estefanía Mercado thanked for its contribution.
In Tulum, Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo visited several neighborhoods where he handed out gifts to children. He was accompanied by three Wise Men Melchor, Gaspar and Baltazar.
The group visited more than a dozen areas around the municipality, incuding Akumal and Chemuyil, where children were presented with gifts.
“I am happy to visit each of the colonies, greet the fathers, the mothers, but above all each one of the children,” said Mayor Diego Castañón.
In Puerto Morelos, Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz celebrated the Day of the Three Wise Men in Fundadores Park in the Old Town. Puerto Morelos residents enjoyed a piece of the 200-meter long rosca, which was donated by Chedraui as a way of promoting healthy coexistence.
“We want citizens to have a moment of leisure and to continue preserving these beautiful traditions which in our country hold a meaning of family unity, friendship and harmony, because whoever finds the little doll that represents baby Jesus becomes the godfather and must invite everyone present to a party of tamales and atole on February 2, Candlemas Day,” she explained.
On Sunday, the city of Cancun celebrated Three King’s Day ahead of the official day. In Cancun, thousands turned out for the traditional celebration of free bread and toys.
