Cancun celebrates Three King’s Day with large rosca de reyes

Cancun, Q.R. — The city of Cancun hosted the traditional “La Rosca Más Grande” (the largest rosca) at the Malecón Tajamar Sunday. Thousands turned out for a free taste of the traditional rosca de reyes or king’s bread in celebration of Three King’s Day.

Berenice Sosa Osorio, head of the Municipal Welfare Secretariat, represented Cancun mayor Ana Paty Peralta at the event. She said the celebration of Three King’s Day strengthens family ties and preserves Mexican customs.

“We are very happy with the response from citizens. This is the Cancun that unites us. This tradition is here to stay and achieve family unity,” she said in an interview.

The public event of the cutting of the large rosca de reyes bread was held a day ahead of the official Three King’s Day, which is January 6. Día de Los Reyes (known elsewhere as Epiphany) is celebrated on January 6 to honor the Three Wise Men.

According to Osorio, the tradition of the rosca de reyes is a custom of Spanish origin that arrived in Mexico to be adopted as one of the most emblematic traditions, since it marks the end of the Christmas season, commemorating the visit of the Three Wise Men to baby Jesus.
