Puerto Morelos dock expansion project pushed into New Year

Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — Paperwork for the Puerto Morelos cargo dock expansion project will continue into next year. According to Iván Ferrat Macera from the Comprehensive Port Administration (Apiqroo) in Puerto Morelos, the necessary paperwork will be submitted in 2025.

Next year, applications to the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) will be sent regarding the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the expansion of the Puerto Morelos pier.

The cargo expansion project was announced in September, when Apiqroo (Administración Portuaria Integral de Quintana Roo) begun working on the environmental impact statement.

The project will involve expanding the draft which would allow the dock to receive deep sea vessels, in particular, from the U.S. which would improve foreign trade.

He said that they are working on using cutting-edge technology to remove rock that is in the middle of the channel. They are hoping to be able to cut the rock away rather than explode it with dynamite.

If successful, he says the expansion will allow for the arrival of more cargo vessels, adding that foreign trade is very important for the economic development of the state.

“We are still working on the project to increase the capacity of ships for foreign trade and deep-sea navigation. We are looking to have vessels with greater capacity and to be able to lower the costs of inputs and products that arrive in the state.

“Many of them arrive by land, which increases the cost of those products. Sea transport is the most economical and safe means of transport,” he said.

He said that details of the MIA that would allow the demolition of the stone are being finalized. Ferrat Macera explained that there are new diamond wire technologies, a technology that will allow the stone to be cut into very fine sections without it dispersing or causing any impact to the maritime community.

He said that the Environmental Impact Statement will be submitted at the beginning of the year, adding that the change of government was another reason why it was delayed.
