Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — The Quintana Roo Port Authority (Apiqroo) is preparing an Environmental Impact Statement (MIA) that will be submitted to the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources.
The Statement is being submitted in order to use cutting-edge technology to expand the draft of the Puerto Morelos fiscal area which is limited by a rock in the middle of the access channel.
According to Iván Ferrat Mancera, representative of Puerto Morelos Apiqroo, the goal is to have more cargo vessels arrive at the dock. He says the issue of foreign trade is very important for the economic development of the state.
“The state government is looking to expand the port and widen the draft in the navigation channel. There is a rock that makes part of the channel less deep and does not allow larger vessels to pass.
“We are doing this because new technology is required. We are in the process of building a Statement to be able to proceed,” he explained.
He explained that the idea of using cutting-edge technology is to avoid causing damage to the maritime zone and, in particular, to protect the reef area located off the coast.
He says Apiqroo itself would be making the investment required for the project without providing a figure.
Rather than using dynamite, he says “there are new diamond wire technologies. It is a technology like a saw in the water that cuts the stone in very thin sections without dispersing or causing any impact and that is why we are doing the environmental impact process so that we can be authorized for this method.”
