Cozumel, Q.R. — An adult crocodile nearly 3 meters long was relocated from the southern coastal highway of Cozumel Saturday. Civil Protection and island firemen responded to a citizen report of the large wandering reptile seen walking the coastal road.

Cozumel City Hall said thanks to a timely citizen report and rapid inter-institutional coordination, the Municipal Government rescued and released an American crocodile measuring approximately 2.90 meters long. The reptile was found on a property located on the southern coastal highway.
Civil Protection and Firefighters responded to the report and arrived at the scene, where they managed to secure the reptile following safety and animal welfare protocols, without causing any injuries or endangering anyone.
Following an assessment by wildlife specialists, the crocodile was confirmed to be in good health.

With the support of the Cozumel Parks and Museums Foundation (FPMC) and the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA), the crocodile was transported to the mangrove area in Punta Sur, the species’ natural habitat, where it was safely released.

The Municipal Government appreciates the responsible participation of citizens, which was key to the preservation of this protected species, and urges everyone to immediately report any sightings of wildlife in urban areas, avoiding attempts to handle the animals themselves. The conservation of our biodiversity is a shared responsibility.
