Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A local man is facing firearm and poaching charges after shooting a deer in north Playa del Carmen. The man was arrested in the area of Xcalacoco after residents reported hearing gunfire Thursday morning.

Police arrived and found a dead deer laying in a grassy area. They began a search for the shooter, who they located nearby in possession of a firearm. He was taken into custody while walking along Avenue Xcalacoco.
The unidentified man is facing firearm charges under the Federal Law on Firearms and Explosives, as well as poaching charges. The body of the dead deer was removed by environmental Profepa (Procuraduria Federal de Proteccion al Ambiente) officers.
Authorities did not provide information as to why the man shot the animal, but did say that damaging, hunting or illegally possessing wildlife is punishable by law.
