Cozumel reports increase in domestic tourism

Cozumel, Q.R. — The Deputy Director of tourism says the influx of domestic tourists has seen an increase between January and June of 2025. José Elías Farah Ceh, Cozumel’s Deputy Director of Tourism for the Cozumel City Council, says the island received a total of 123,869 domestic tourists by air, according to data provided by the Cozumel International Airport.

Cozumel has seen an increase in domestic tourist arrivals during the first half of the year with a total of 123,869 visitors arriving by air, representing more than 34 percent of total arrivals during that period.

José Elías Farah Ceh says that this increase reflects the growing interest of domestic tourists in exploring the island.

Compared to the same period in 2024, when 118,724 domestic tourists were counted (equivalent to 27.75 percent of the total), this year saw an increase of 5,145 visitors. Farah Ceh emphasized that this positive difference confirms an upward trend in Mexicans’ preference for Cozumel as a vacation destination.

The official mentioned that the months of May and June were particularly notable, with 24,465 and 23,850 seats occupied, respectively. He also detailed that 20,079 domestic visitors were registered in January, 16,059 in February, 16,421 in March, and 22,995 in April, according to figures from airport operator ASUR.

Pablo Alfonso Aguilar Torres, representative of the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council (CPTQ), noted that 2024 was an atypically favorable year in terms of tourist influx, so this year’s results should not be interpreted as negative in comparison.

“We had record numbers of tourist arrivals to Cozumel by air. It’s necessary to maintain proper proportions to avoid generating a negative perception when the opposite is true,” he said.
