Isla Mujeres families exchange 3 tons of recyclable waste for household items

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — The government of Isla Mujeres collected three tons of recyclable waste Tuesday during an exchange program. The government promotes the recycling of PET, cardboard, glass, aluminum cans and other recyclable waste in exchange for basic household goods, toys and appliances.

Three tons of recyclable waste was collected in one day. July 15, 2025.

During their last drive, a total of three tons of recyclable waste was made in exchange for household food and other needed items to municipal families. Isla Mujeres Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde says the Ecological Store exchange promotes environmental protection while also contributing to the well being of local families.

“With a firm commitment to continue promoting actions that contribute to environmental protection and the well-being of island families, the Isla Mujeres Government, led by Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde, held another edition of the “Tiendita Ecológica” (Ecological Store) program as part of the “ATendiendo a la Gente” (Serving People) public hearings, held this time at the Hugo Ravell Dome on the Mainland Zone,” she said.

“During the event, children, youth and adults participated in the initiative which promotes recycling and responsible consumption by exchanging recyclable materials such as PET, cardboard, glass, aluminum cans and other recyclable waste for basic household goods, toys, and appliances.

“Thanks to the strong citizen participation, a total of 3 tons of waste was collected, and environmental awareness was also strengthened for the circular economy.

“These actions, promoted by the General Directorate of Social Development in coordination with the General Directorate of Public Services, reflect the City Council’s ongoing efforts to maintain a clean, orderly and safe municipality,” she explained.

The exchange encourages Isla Mujeres families to recycle

Atenea Gómez emphasized that programs like the Tiendita Ecológica are part of a model of close and humane citizen service which is building a sustainable Isla Mujeres, under the principles of the New Agreement for the Well-being and Development of Quintana Roo.
