Second named storm of Atlantic season forms off coast of Mexico

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — The second named storm of the 2025 Atlantic season has formed. On Sunday morning, Tropical Storm Barry became the second disturbance of the year to develop into a named storm.

At the time of development (10:00 a.m. CDT), the center of Barry was located approximately 140 kms (90 miles) east of Tuxpan, Mexico with maximum sustained winds of 65 km/h (40 mph). Tropical Storm Barry is currently moving northwest at around 9 km/h (6 mph).

With the official development of Barry, the NOAA says a Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for the Gulf coast of Mexico from Boca de Catan southward to Tecolutla.

Barry’s northwest motion is expected to continue throughout Sunday. On the forecast track, the storm is expected to make landfall and then move inland over eastern Mexico later today or tonight.

According to the NOAA, Air Force Reconnaissance data indicates that maximum sustained winds have increase to near 40 mph (65 km/h) with higher gusts. A little more intensification is forecast before the system reaches the coast of eastern Mexico. Rapid weakening is expected after the system moves inland. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles (55 km) from the center.
