Islanders clear 40 tons from Cozumel beach in massive two day cleanup

Cozumel, Q.R. — Islanders spent two days removing what has turned out to be 40 tons of sargassum from a Cozumel beach. The massive two day cleanup began Friday and lasted into Saturday.

According to Cozumel Mayor José Luis Chacón Méndez, volunteers successfully carried out the second day of the massive sargassum cleanup of the 2025 season on Playa Chen Río. He reported that the cleanup resulted in the removal approximately 40 tons of the marine plant.

The beach clean was coordinated by the Federal Maritime Land Zone (Zofemat) Directorate, Irwin Batún Alpuche and included the participation of more than 500 City Hall employees, 162 Marina personnel and 30 young military personnel.

Batún Alpuche reported that special care was taken in the cleanup of sargassum at the beach’s sea turtle nesting areas.

Batún Alpuche thanked everyone who participated in the deployed forces. He said the sargassum removal “continues positioning the island as an ecological destination and strengthening the conservation of our flora and fauna as a community.”
