Public Services clears over 200,000 tons of illegally tossed garbage from PDC lots

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — More than 200,000 tons of garbage has been collected in the ongoing campaign to clean up and eliminate illegal dumpsites. The cleanup is in direct response to citizen requests to have properties cleared of junk and other debris.

Mayor Estefanía Mercado led the supervision of the dredging of absorption wells and the cleanup of properties used as clandestine dumps in various locations in the Ejido neighborhood Friday.

The operation was carried out in coordination with the Secretary of Public Services, Julieta Martín Azueta.

The Mayor emphasized that these efforts are part of the municipal strategy.

“We are increasing our efforts to keep the city clean, respond to neighborhood reports, and eliminate hotspots that put the health and well-being of families at risk,” she said during the tour.

She acknowledged that the municipality continues to face a problem by people who toss garbage and unwanted items in the street “as if it were no longer their responsibility.”

Fortunately, she said, “we have our heroes from Public Services who every day, pick up what others leave behind. So, neighbors, help us keep Playa del Carmen clean. A clean city is built by everyone!”

Playa del Carmen Public Services Secretary Julieta Martín Azueta reported that as part of its ongoing cleanup program, the Municipal Government has collected more than 200,000 tons of waste so far this year.

Additionally, through the Emergency Junk Removal Program implemented in recent weeks following the rainy season, more than 80 tons of junk has been removed in neighborhoods such as La Guadalupana, El Petén, Ejido, and Nicte-Há, among others.

On Wednesday, brigades from the Public Services Department cleaned up two vacant lots that were used as illegal garbage dumps. At these locations, warning signs were posted regarding illegal dumping. Those caught, she said, will be punished with up to 36 hours of arrest as well as community service.
