Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Federal authorities in Playa del Carmen have closed a construction project on Avenue Xcalacoco. The removal of vegetation to build a parking lot was started in October by an adjacent company.
In October, area residents filed complaints with the city for the removal of the trees and shurbs on the land. On Thursday, The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) placed closure seals at the front of site.
It was the third such visit. In November, the Playa del Carmen City Council subsequently issued a stop-work order, however, the company obtained a removal permit and continued the work.

In December, area residents protested in front of the site, stating that the work was being carried out without an authorized Environmental Impact Statement. They also accused Profepa of failing to respond to their filed complaints against the project.
On January 15, Profepa closed the site, which has already been cleared of a majority of its vegetation. The company that owns the land intends to build an employee parking lot.
