Riviera Maya, Q.R. — President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum says within two years, the Tren Maya will connect with the Port of Progreso as a cargo train. The connection will be made via an extension project constructed by the Ministry of National Defense.
Sheinbaum reported that the cargo train could be completed in two years with the Ministry of National Defense in charge of its development. The announcement was made Thursday.
Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa participated in a strategic projects meeting with Sheinbaum and other governors from the southeast. During the meeting, they talked about the completion of the Maya Train as a cargo train which would include an extension to the Port of Progreso, Yucatan.
According to Sheinbaum, the cargo train completion is planned for between two and two-and-a-half years with an investment of close to 35 billion peso. The expanded project will include additional infrastructure for intermodal parks, cargo storage, etc.
Sheinbaum says the National Defense Secretariat already has the project.
“They would develop it and what we are seeing is whether it can be completed in one year or two to two-and-a-half years, but it would take a maximum of two years for the Maya Train freight train to be up and running,” she explained.
Governor Mara Lezama, who also attended the meeting, explained that in the case of Quintana Roo, “strategic projects focused on social justice, bridging inequality gaps and achieving profound transformation.”
Among these, macro projects of infrastructure, mobility, tourism and economic development, environment and sustainability, agrarian development, security, peace building and civil protection, to continue strengthening the economic development and social well-being of the state, she said.
In June, Sheinbaum attended a meeting on board the Tren Maya where she hinted at the possible expansion project to the Port of Progreso.
