Police using drones to crack down on illegal Cancun beach vendors

Cancun, Q.R. — State police continue to use drones to not only monitor public areas, but to also track down criminals. Last week, members of the Itzamná drone group of the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) made 24 arrests of illegal street vendors.

Police locate illegal beach vendors on Cancun beaches.

The vendors were located on Cancun beaches selling to tourists without permits, something that has been a problem in the past. Many of these “pirates” or illegal vendors offer services such as the rental of vehicles or the sale of products or services outside their competences.

The 24 arrested were located last week during 57 drone flights over 145 kilometers of Quintana Roo coastline. During those flyovers, the SSC reported locating a total of 39 wanted people, of which 24 were arrested.

“The “Itzamná” drone group of the Secretariat of Citizen Security carried out a total of 57 flights, an average of 8 flights per day, equivalent to 16 hours and 145 kilometers traveled on the coast of Quintana Roo,” the Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana (SSC) of Quintana Roo reported.

“During this last week, surveillance, prevention and deterrence of crime was provided in the Hotel Zone of Cancun in support of the Tourist Police and as a result, the identification of 39 people was achieved of which 24 were arrested for street vending without the necessary permits,” the SSC added.

A total of 24 were arrested last week for selling without permits.

Illegal beach vendors create problems for tourists as well as area merchants who do have permits to sell. The two dozen taken into custody were arrested for administrative infractions.
