Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A new entrance arch project to the municipality of Playa del Carmen is nearing completion. The arch over the federal highway is being constructed north of the city between the Puerto Morelos and Playa del Carmen border.

Dorys Aké Sierra, the Secretary of PDC Infrastructure and Public Works, said the metal and rock project is nearing 95 percent finished. She said they expect the project to be completed in coming weeks, at which time, they will inaugurate the municipality’s new welcome entrance.
Aside from decorative lighting, the new access arch will be outfitted with video surveillance cameras that will be connected to the first police highway checkpoint station.
“The main objective of the project is to build an iconic structure that serves as a welcome point and represents our city’s cultural and tourist identity, improving accessibility, urban aesthetics, and road safety in the access area,” she explained.
According to Mayor Estefanía Mercado, the access arch, which is being built at the north entrance heading toward Puerto Morelos, will feature high-tech cameras compatible with the C4 system, speed bumps, speed radar, facial recognition reader and an RFID reader.

The overall height will be 13 meters, the height of the clearance will be seven meters, the columns will have a base of 8 by 10 meters, and the distance from the road to the side will be 40 meters.

The investment is just over 40 million pesos, money used from Environmental Sanitation Financing, benefiting more than 333,000 residents.
