Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Zofemat says certified Playa del Carmen beaches will have recorded approximately half a million visitors. During 2025, the municipality’s certified beaches are expected to have attracted around half a million people.
Irving Lili Madrigal, the PDC Director of the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone, says the last count was done in mid-2025 when the number was at 250,000. He said that year-end figure is likely to be higher than half a million since the city does not record visitor numbers to uncertified beaches.
Some of the most visited public beaches include Playas Pelícanos, 88, Playacar, Coco, Mamitas, Punta Esmeralda and Xcalacoco not to mention the large beach area at Parque Los Fundadores.

“The last count, which we did in the middle of the year, showed about 250,000 people visiting the certified beaches, but remember that Playa del Carmen is quite large.
“We don’t have the capacity to count all beachgoers,” Lili Madrigal noting that people who visit uncertified beaches are not counted.
He says for the current holidays, the Blue Flag certified beaches have been reinforced with additional staff who have received English language training to assist foreign visitors.
He also noted that all the city’s beaches are in good condition despite a heavy sargassum year.

He reported that during 2026, Zofemat (Zona Federal Marítimo Terrestre) will work with the Municipal Tourism Secretariat to launch an advertising campaign for the municipality’s beaches.
