PDC pair facing federal charges for possession of loaded rifles and over 1,800 rounds of ammunition

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Two people found in possession of loaded weapons and rounds of ammunition are facing federal charges. The Attorney General of the Republic (FGR) is moving forward with charges of carrying and stockpiling firearms.

Sara “N” and José “N” are facing charges “for their probable involvement in the crimes of carrying and stockpiling firearms, possession of cartridges and magazines, all for the exclusive use of the armed forces,” the FGR reported.

The FGR obtained a formal indictment against Sara “N” and José “N” after they were found with 12 loaded rifles and 1,800 rounds of ammunition. The pair were found heavily armed during a stop in a residential area of Playa del Carmen last month.

“The Federal Prosecutor’s Office in Quintana Roo, attached to the Specialized Regional Control Prosecutor’s Office, initiated the investigation derived from the receipt of a breakdown sent by the State Attorney General’s Office, through which it made available to the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office two people arrested along with 12 long firearms and two short firearms, 1,800 cartridges and 90 magazines,” they reported.

The arrests of Sara “N” and José “N” took place in the vicinity of Hipocampo Avenue in the Marsella 3 subdivision in Playa del Carmen. Both are being held without bail during their trials.

“The people mentioned in this statement are presumed innocent until a guilty verdict is issued by the competent judicial authority,” the FGR said.

Authorities did not say if the pair were part of a criminal group that runs firearms.

On Tuesday, Ricardo Trevilla Trejo, Mexico’s Secretary of National Defense, reported 80% of the firearms seized in the country since Claudia Sheinbaum became president originate in the U.S. During her administration, over 23,000 firearms have been seized.
