PDC city hall addressing continued power outage issues with CFE

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — PDC City Hall says they continue to work with CFE regarding the ongoing power failures around the city. One of those failures has been blamed on vandalism. A secondary reason for the failures, PDC city council says, has been overloading.

Playa del Carmen City Council General Secretary Luis Herrera Quiam explained that the Thursday power outage was a consequence of damage caused to a distribution point of electrical networks.

He said after a CFE evaluation, the issue was described as an act of vandalism. He says the city is waiting for the official report from the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) to determine the exact causes.

While they wait for the CFE report, some areas in the west part of the city are still without electricity. Late Friday night, PDC Mayor Estefanía Mercado provided a CFE update.

“We have just been informed that power service is being restored in the Galaxia and Selvanova areas.

“CFE personnel continue working to gradually normalize service throughout the city. We remain in constant communication and are closely monitoring the situation until full service is restored.”

Mayor Mercado has posted seven CFE updates since May 7 in response to the ongoing power outages around Playa del Carmen.

Areas such as Real Ibiza, Paseos Sisal, Selvanova, Ejido have been affected by the longest outage at nearly 12 hours. Residents in Paseos de Sisal, Xcacel, Ejido Norte and Villas del Sol reported an outage at 10:00 p.m. Thursday night.

CFE reportedly worked throughout the night to restore service in those areas.

Mayor Mercado issued an official statement yesterday saying “Playa del Carmen Family: Given the constant power outages affecting various parts of our city, I have been in direct communication with the superintendent in charge of the CFE (Federal Electricity Commission) peninsula region.

CFE worked Friday to restore service to areas that lost power the night before. May 8, 2026.

“Currently, the CFE is deploying additional support equipment to Playa del Carmen to address the outages and expedite the restoration of service to the affected areas.

“We are fully aware of the inconvenience, disruption, and frustration this situation is causing for thousands of families, businesses, and workers. Words and justifications cannot adequately address the hardships our citizens are experiencing.

“For our part, we will continue to press, advocate, and maintain constant communication with the CFE to demand efficient service and a swift resolution to this problem. We will continue to provide updates through official channels.”
