Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — More than a dozen caged animals have been rescued from a property in Playa del Carmen. Local authorities reported removing 15 specimens found caged during a property seizure.
The State Attorney General’s (FGE) Office reported that during the proceedings to comply with a judicial order to seize and return a property to its owner, they located 15 specimens of wild fauna.

The animals were found on a 60-hectare property in poor conditions of hygiene and food.
Personnel from the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection and the Quintana Roo Ministry of Environment seized the animals. According to the FGE, the animals were removed from a 60-hectare property called Balam Há, located in the municipality of Playa del Carmen.
“While carrying out the procedures for the restitution of the property, at a distance of approximately 800 meters, they located cages where the specimens of wild fauna were kept,” authorities said in a statement.
Among the animals found were five jaguars, four black jaguars, two macaws, a puma, a howler monkey, a magpie, and a king condor.
The FGE said at the time of the property seizure, the animals were found without food or water, “and were confined in very small spaces and in unhygienic conditions.”
After the property was seized, “the animals were placed under the care of the environmental authorities.”

The FGE says they are investigating to find those responsible for keeping the animals in poor conditon.
