PDC authorities battling wildfire near XelHá ruins

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — PDC firemen begun battling a wildfire near the XelHá ruins Saturday afternoon. The fire, which grew to approximately 200 square meters, was battled by more than a dozen men in four trucks.

Firefighters and Municipal Civil Protection worked Saturday to contain the blaze located south of the city of Playa del Carmen. Authorities reported that a firebreak has been established to prevent the fire from spreading to areas of greater environmental or archaeological value.

Authorities also report that control and suppression efforts continue under difficult conditions due to dry vegetation and gusty winds. Civil Protection is maintaining surveillance in the Riviera Maya area and reported that they will continue to work until the fire is completely extinguished.

Firemen have also attended several other incidents near residential areas along CTM Avenue, Marsella 3, Paseos de Xcacel and Paseos de Sisal, where residents have expressed concern about the strong smell of smoke, especially at night.
