The accident happened inside the business on Tulum Avenue due to a gas leak. According to available information, the business had a new hot water heater installed that was the believed source of the leak.

Both of the ice cream shop owners were on site at the time of the explosion. The second owner, Maria “A”, continues to recover.

“Members of the Cancun Fire Department responded to a fire in a food establishment, resulting from an explosion in the kitchen area,” Bomberos Cancun reported at the time.

“Upon arriving at the scene, personnel located an active fire in the back of the establishment, so extinguishing maneuvers were immediately carried out, managing to control the fire in its entirety.

“As a result of the incident, injured people were recorded.”
