Cancun, Q.R. — Emergency responders were at the scene of a gas explosion that left a central Cancun business in ruins. On Friday afternoon, police, firemen and Civil Protection rushed to a shopping plaza in SM 20.
Three people were treated for injuries at the scene, two of whom were transferred to hospital with burns.
The gas explosion left the entire kitchen of the business blown to pieces. According to Cancun Civil Protection, the powerful explosion also damaged surrounding businesses and vehicles.
In a statement, the Cancun fire department said the explosion happened in the back of the business, an ice cream store. The entire back of the building was found burning and blown out by the 4:00 p.m. gas leak.

“On Friday afternoon, members of the Cancun Fire Department responded to a fire in a food establishment, resulting from an explosion in the kitchen area.
“Upon arriving at the scene, personnel located an active fire in the back of the establishment, so extinguishing maneuvers were immediately carried out, managing to control the fire in its entirety.
“As a result of the incident, injured people were recorded, who were treated by medical services and transferred for evaluation. Likewise, there were damages to nearby premises and a nearby vehicle due to the impact of the event.
“The service was carried out in coordination with Cancun Civil Protection, medical services and security authorities, maintaining verification tasks to rule out additional risks.
“We reiterate the importance of checking gas installations and kitchen equipment, as well as addressing any anomaly immediately,” Bomberos Cancun reported.
