Over 40,000 participate in the opening of Cancun’s Nichupté bridge

Cancun, Q.R. — Authorities say over 40,000 people participated in the weekend inauguration of the Cancun Nichupté bridge. On inauguration day, thousands gathered on the bridge for a bike ride before its official opening.

After the inauguration, the city of Cancun held a live concert in celebration of the long awaited project. However, public traffic use was delayed two days while the bridge underwent touchups before being officially opened.

Since then, local motorists have made use of the bridge, reducing city travel times into the Cancun Hotel Zone by more than half-an-hour.

Thousands of vehicles use the mainland to hotel zone bridge every day May 7, 2026.

According to Governor Mara Lezama, the bridge speed limit is 60 kilometers per hour and has cargo transport, trailers and motorcycle restrictions.

During this first stage, the bridge will operate from 4:30 a.m. to midnight, hours that will expand as of  May 25. Until then, workers continue with the installation of the bike lane road studs for the safety and protection of cyclists.

On May 25, the bridge operating hours will be extended until 1:00 a.m.

The operation of the reversible lane is in operation from 4:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the direction of the hotel zone, while from 4:30 p.m. to midnight, it reverses its direction toward downtown Cancun.

The entire bridge is just over 11 kilometers long across the city’s lagoon May 7, 2026.

The governor indicated that the bridge is under constant monitoring by the C5 command centre and in coordination with the Navy to respond to emergencies.

The Governor reiterated that the Nichupté Vehicular Bridge represents a historic project for Cancun, reducing travel times between the hotel zone and the city, as well as becoming a strategic road alternative for workers and residents of the tourist destination.

“It was a great celebration for a majestic work that improves people’s quality of life,” she said.

Governor Lezama asked motorists and cyclists to drive with caution and avoid recording videos while traveling on the bridge to prevent distractions that result in accidents.

On the first full day of operation, a Cancun driver caused an accident on the bridge will trying to video his journey.
