Cancun, Q.R. — Cancun Transit were kept busy on the opening day of the Nichupté bridge with driver distraction causing the first accident. Three incidents were recorded on the first day of the bridge being opened to public traffic.
Early Wednesday morning, a truck was left immobile in a lane due to a flat tire. Drivers were forced to go around the stopped vehicle while the driver made the change on the bridge near Kukulcán Boulevard.
Around 9:00 a.m., a group of bicyclists were involved in a crash as they descended the bridge at Bonampak Avenue. A rider in front lost control of their bicycle, causing several other cyclists to fall to the ground.

One woman sustained minor injuries. The cyclists helped each other to their feet and eventually continued on their way.
At 3:00 p.m., Cancun Transit were sent to the bridge to attend to the first official car accident. A Cancun driver was heading toward the hotel zone when he hit bridge infrastructure while making a video.
The impact was strong enough to dislodge his front passenger tire, leaving his car immobile and blocking a lane.
Motorists who reported the accident said the male driver was using his cell phone to record his journey while crossing the bridge. While videoing, he swerved and made contact with bridge infrastructure that left a front wheel sticking out.

Municipal Transit officers and police arrived to secure the area and prevent another accident while the damaged car was towed from the bridge.
