Occupant suffers second and third degree burns in PDC gas explosion

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — The occupant of a Playa del Carmen townhouse was left with serious burns from an LP gas explosion Friday. Emergency services were sent to an address in the Altaira residential subdivision due to the enormous blast.

Neighbors were shaken from their own homes from the explosion that blew out the entire back portion of the townhouse and part of the front.

The sole occupant of the home received second and third degree burns to his upper body. Two dogs inside the home were treated at the scene. Both received on-site treatment, including oxygen.

Shaken neighbors reported the incident around 3:00 p.m. after hearing the explosion and seeing glass fly to the other side of the street.

Playa del Carmen firemen and Civil Protection arrived at the address at the end of 125th Avenue South where they located the blown-out home.

Cristian “N” was found injured, suffering second and third degree burns. After receiving first aid, he was transported to a private hospital for specialized burn care.

The explosion also blew out front windows and doors February 27, 2026.

Early information says the explosion happened due to an accumulation of LP gas. An ignited spark caused the explosion. Authorities have not confirmed an official cause for the explosion.
