Nighttime temps dip down to 12C (53F) while entire peninsula continues to be engulfed in Arctic air mass

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Winter continues for the Mexican Caribbean with the arrival of Arctic air mass cold front 37. State Civil Protection says nighttime temperatures dipped down to 12C in some regions, figures that are expected again for tonight.

“The modified Arctic air mass that propelled cold front number 37 will maintain the “Norte” event with gusts from the northeast of 30 to 50 km/h, mainly over the coastal areas of the state,” Coordinación Estatal de Protección Civil Quintana Roo reported this morning.

Due to the strong north winds, waves of 2 to 3 meters in height are likely off the coast of Quintana Roo. Strong winds and waves will have an effect on maritime activity, however, ferry services have been continue normally.

“Partly cloudy skies will prevail, with a low probability of rain. Warm conditions are expected during the day and mild to cool conditions in the early morning and at dawn. Fog banks are forecast in rural and urban areas and along highways,” State Civil Protection added.

The large mass of Arctic air, cold front 37, extends all the way to Nicaragua and Haiti.

Protección Civil Solidaridad (Playa del Carmen) reported Tuesday that “the Arctic polar air mass over the state of Texas and the southeastern United States, is maintaining cold and frigid conditions over the northern, northeastern, eastern, southeastern and central states of Mexico.

“In the states of Tamaulipas and Veracruz, winds are shifting to the Eeast and southeast with gusts of 40 to 60 km/h. Strong northerly winds persist over the Isthmus and Gulf of Tehuantepec, with possible gusts of 80 km/h.

“The frontal system is expected to cross over Hispaniola on Wednesday morning and enter the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Its cold air mass will then move over the Florida Peninsula, gradually increasing temperatures across the country.

“Today, winter weather continues to dominate over the Yucatan Peninsula with cold temperatures, northerly winds of 10 to 20 km/h with gusts of 50 km/h, cloudy skies, and stable weather with no rain.

It is uncertain if the next incoming cold front will affect the peninsula

“A new cold front is expected to enter the northeast of the country this weekend, though it remains uncertain whether it will reach the Yucatan Peninsula.”
