Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — The first public buses for mainland Isla Mujeres were put into operation Monday. Five public buses began offering 13 stops along Costa Mujeres routes as part of a new urban transport option for the Continental Zone.
Isla Mujeres Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde called the start of operations “a historic achievement for mobility.” According to Ricalde, the new public buses are in response to a two decade-old request by mainland residents.
“In a historic achievement for mobility and as a result of coordinated efforts with authorities from federal, state and municipal governments, Atenea Gómez Ricalde gave the starting signal for the new urban public transport routes for the Continental Zone.
“These new routes are implemented with the aim of improving the quality of life of the inhabitants of Ciudad Mujeres, mainly to provide well-being to students and workers,” she said in a statement Monday.
Accompanied by Rodrigo Alcazar, head of the Mobility Institute of the State of Quintana Roo, Atenea Gómez said that with this project, one of the most heartfelt demands of the population is met, who had to wait more than two decades to receive an accessible and efficient urban transport solution.
The mayor of Isla Mujeres mentioned that this new service will benefit thousands of people while promoting the development, connectivity and mobility of this area, a priority for her Municipal Administration.
The new transport system began Monday with five units that will operate on two routes. The first, with 14 stops and the second with 13, both covering a distance of 11 kilometers from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
With a preferential rate of 5 pesos for students, seniors and people with disabilities, and a general public rate of 10 pesos, the service seeks to be accessible to the entire community.
Last week, Ricalde announced the acquisition of the buses and the creation of the new routes, which were scheduled to begin operating November 4, 2024.
