New Cancun Public Security head looking to fill positions after others resign following his takeover

Cancun, Q.R. — At least three senior officials from the Cancun police department have resigned. The three left the Cancun police force following the departure of their former leader Carlos Ernesto D’amiano earlier this week.

All three who have left their posts lead other departments within the Cancun police. Those departments were the Preventative Police, Tourist Police and the Specialized Group on Domestic and Gender Violence(Geavig).

The senior officials of the Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security and Traffic in Cancun were reported close collaborators of the now former secretary Carlos Ernesto D’Amiano. All four submitted their resignations this past week following the resignation of D’amiano on July 16.

After only 17 months leading the corporation, D’amiano offered his resignation Wednesday during a heated City Hall meeting in which Mayor Ana Peralta attended. That same day, a new leader, Jaime Padilla Barrientos, took over as the Secretario Municipal de Seguridad Ciudadana y Tránsito (SMSCyT).

Jaime Padilla Barrientos, front, second from right, takes over the Cancun Police Department.

He was sworn in during an afternoon City Hall meeting, replacing Carlos Ernesto D’amiano only hours after resigning.

Since then, others have left including David Flores Cervantes, the Director of Preventive Police and Ricardo Morales Santos, a frigate lieutenant appointed Director of the Tourist Police.

The last to resign was Mónica San Juan, head of the Specialized Group for Attention to Domestic and Gender Violence (Geavig).

Jaime Padilla Barrientos has confirmed that the three police positions are vacant and that seven applications are currently being reviewed to fill them. He did not comment as to why the three department heads chose to suddenly resign from their positions.
