Mayor swears in new Secretary of Citizen Security to lead Cancun police

Cancun, Q.R. — Cancun Mayor Ana Paty Peralta has sworn in a new Municipal Secretary for Citizen Security and Transit (SMSCyT). The ceremony was held Wednesday afternoon during a City Council meeting.

“I reiterate to the people of Cancun, for security and peace, we will not take a single step back. We will continue making firm and responsible decisions, strengthening our police, addressing the causes of violence and making Cancún a safer place for everyone,” said Peralta during the swearing-in ceremony.

On Wednesday, the City of Cancun welcomed Jaime Padilla Barrientos as the new Secretario Municipal de Seguridad Ciudadana y Tránsito (SMSCyT). He is replacing Carlos Ernesto D’amiano Sumuano who resigned Wednesday morning during a heated City Council meeting.

“Security and peacebuilding in our city are the highest priorities of this municipal government. In keeping with this commitment to Cancun and its citizens, today we are carrying out a strategic changeover in the Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security and Traffic,” the Mayor stated.

As of Wednesday, the Secretariat will be headed by Jaime Padilla Barrientos, a leader with more than 32 years of operational and strategic experience in key areas of security and intelligence in Puebla, Chiapas the National Migration Institute (INM), and in National Defense, as a Military Police officer.

Peralta stressed that for the past two years, he served as an Investigative Police officer in the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Quintana Roo.

This change, she noted, is part of a coordinated strategy across all levels of government that recognizes that security is not the sole responsibility of one authority, but rather a shared task that requires coordination, intelligence, will and commitment from all institutions.

Jaime Padilla Barrientos, second from right in uniform, will lead Cancun Police.

“In Quintana Roo, we are aligned with the new Citizen Security model promoted by our Governor Mara Lezama and the national security strategy of our President Claudia Sheinbaum.”

After the ceremony, Peralta immediately held a meeting with the new Secretary and the 14 directors who make up the Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security and Traffic (SMSCyT), with the aim of coordinating efforts and working together to promote security and peacebuilding.

“I am here to reaffirm my commitment as Mayor to the highest priority for our city and for the families of Cancun: security and peacebuilding. Responding to that commitment, today we are strengthening our Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security and Transit, a strategic decision that as a government, we take with absolute seriousness and conviction,” stated Mayor Ana Paty Peralta during the corporation’s inauguration ceremony and roll call.

She also expressed her gratitude for the support and backing of the Navy. “Their backing was key to beginning to reorganize the corporation and achieving great results.”

The Secretary of Citizen Security (SSC) of Quintana Roo, Julio César Gómez Torres reiterated the commitment of the SSC to continue working to deliver real results. He reported that thanks to collaborative work, the state ranks third in reduction of intentional homicides with 51.3 percent less of these crimes, and specifically Cancún has managed to reduce its figures by 53 percent, for which he invited Padilla Barrientos to lead in that direction for the sake of citizen integrity.
