Cancun’s head of Public Security resigns during heated meeting with City Council

Cancun, Q.R. — A heated meeting in Cancun City Hall has resulted in the accepted resignation of its now-former Secretary of Citizen Security. On Wednesday, Cancun’s Municipal Secretary of Citizen Security, Carlos Ernesto D’amiano Sumuano, resigned following a heated argument with council members including Mayor Ana Patricia Peralta.

Performance indicators for the public safety department were what fueled the Wednesday morning meeting. According to sources, unsatisfactory figures began the heated argument that lead to accusations that ended with the resignation of the Secretary of Citizen Security.

The accepted resignation of D’amiano Sumuano came amid a surge in criminal activity around the city that is being blamed on the absence of effective strategies to curb crime, among other reasons.

D’amiano Sumuano, who was appointed by the Ministry of the Navy (Semar), submitted his resignation amid reports of a lack of institutional support, allegations of collusion and accusations related to the Cancun Hotel Zone.

Cancun City Hall has not formally announced the resignation of Carlos Ernesto D’amiano Sumuano, however, sources say D’amiano Sumuano offered his resignation Wednesday morning which was “immediately accepted” by Mayor Peralta.

Carlos Ernesto D’amiano Sumuano, left, assumed the position February 2, 2024.

The position has been transferred to David Flores Cervantes, also a military officer. The new head of Cancun Public Security is expected to be announced Wednesday at 4:00 PM.
