Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Police in Playa del Carmen raided a bar over the weekend, freeing 20 woman. Police say the women were victims of human trafficking in the form of prostitution.
The raid was carried out in collaboration with personnel from the FGE Investigative Police, National Guard and Navy. Of the 20, they reported 17 were Mexican nationals, two from Cuban and one of Venezuelan nationality and were “recruited out of economic necessity.”
Authorities carried out the procedure in an establishment that operates as a bar in which 20 women were located, presumed victims of acts possibly constituting the crime of human trafficking in its form of prostitution of others, the FGE reported in a statement.
“The request for the search warrant stems from investigations by the Investigative Police which revealed that men would come to the premises located on 4th North Street, between 125th West Avenue and 20th Street , and leave with women, and later the women would return to the bar.

“During the court order, the participating agents located 20 women, of whom 17 are Mexican nationals, two are Cuban and one is Venezuelan, who stated that they were recruited out of economic necessity.
“According to initial investigations, the women worked as barmaids, charging 200 pesos per drink, of which they received 100 pesos. They also offered sexual services ranging from 800 to 1,500 pesos per hour, the women kept 50 percent of what they charged.”
Investigative Police officers proceeded to place the seizure seals on the premises, which is now under the custody of the State Attorney General’s Office. Police did not announce arrests.
