Navy readying to build new sargassum collection vessel for Quintana Roo

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — A new at-sea sargassum collection vessel has been announced for the state of Quintana Roo. The announcement was made during a Wednesday meeting between Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa and the Secretary of the Navy, Admiral José Rafael Ojeda Durán.

During their meeting in Cancun, a renewed agreement between the State Government and the Navy was signed to continue with the strategy to address sargassum.

The strategy includes support and coordinated collaboration for comprehensive care of the arrival of sargassum as well as the construction of a new coastal sargassum vessel.

The new coastal sargassum vessel (buque sargacero costero or BSC) will measure 15 meters in length, 5.5 meters in width and have a load capacity of 20 tons. The vessel will also be equipped with a sargassum collecting belt and a crane for handling weights of 2.6 tons, as well as all the necessary systems.

When the project of a new sargassum vessel was presented earlier this month, it was reported that the construction time was estimated at four months.
